New Standards Reduce Risk of Infant Death and Injury

Adorable crochet teddy bear mobile with stars and clouds for baby nursery.

Two new mandatory standards which aim to reduce risk of death and injury from products that babies do or may fall asleep in must be complied with by businesses from 19 January 2026.  Infant sleep products have a surface for an infant to lie on. They are designed or marketed for an infant to sleep on or to soothe or settle an infant. The mandatory safety standard applies to design, construction, performance, and testing requirements for infant sleep products. The ACCC Supplier Guide provides suppliers with guidance to help comply with the mandatory standards. Find out more about the products that the standards do and do not apply to on the ACCC Infant sleep products mandatory standards site. View the full detail of the mandatory standard, fines and penalties may apply for failure to comply. For more information, see fines and penalties.

Consumer Federation of Australia (CFA) engages with these issues through the CFA Standards Project, supporting a representative to the Standards Australia committee CS-310 Child care articles. The committee has been working on the revised set of product safety standards to clarify and strengthen mattress firmness requirements, address CO? risks and improve sleep safety communication about Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI). Find out more about Standards Australia’s Safety standards to save babies lives  and Safe Sleeping standards.  Anyone can view an Australian standard FREE in the Standards Australia Reader Room – after registering you will have access to three (3) unique standards in one calendar year, with unlimited access to each standard for a 24-hour period.
