Child-Resistant Packaging – Draft Standard Open for Public Comment

SAFETY

Child-resistant packaging is used to create a physical barrier between a child and a potentially hazardous product. Various types of packaging are recognized as being child-resistant, based on performance testing against standards for specific product categories and packaging types. Since this type of packaging was introduced, the incidence of accidental ingestion of potentially hazardous products by children under five years old has fallen. Child-resistant packaging is only the last in a series of protective measures and does not release parents or guardians from their duty to keep potentially dangerous products out of the reach of children.

Two Draft standards are open for Public Comment:

DR AS 5014 Child-resistant packaging — Requirements and testing procedures for nonreclosable packages for pharmaceutical products (ISO 14375:2018, MOD

DR AS 5808 Child-resistant packaging — Requirements and testing procedures for nonreclosable packages for non-pharmaceutical products (ISO 28862:2018, MOD

These Standards were prepared by the Standards Australia Committee HE-016, Child Resistant Packaging and are an adoption with national modifications, and have been reproduced from ISO 28862:2018, and ISO 14375:2018.

The Draft Standards are open for Public Comment until 23 January 2025. Standards Australia encourages views and input from a wide cross section of the public on a draft publication during the Public Comment stage. Find the Draft Standards in the full list of drafts currently available for public comment.
