Recently Australia has experienced record-breaking rainfall and floods, generating the perfect storm for the spread of mould in water-damaged properties. Condensation in your home can cause damp, mould, and rot. This can cause rotting of building materials and, if mould spores become airborne indoors, harmful effects on human health.
A new Draft Australian Standard AS-IICRC S520:2025, Standard for Professional Mold Remediation is Open for Public Comment until 3 April 2025 – the document identifies the procedures to be followed and the precautions to be taken when performing mould remediation in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, and the systems and personal property contained within those structures. This document is an adoption with national modifications and has been reproduced from ANSI/IICRCS520:2024, the modifications are additional requirements set out in the Appendix. Standards Australia encourages views and input from a wide cross section of the public on a draft publication during the Public Comment stage. Mould in buildings can be a serious health and safety hazard in your home and workplace. Properties for rent need to be free from mould and damp and meet minimum standards for ventilation. The rental provider (landlord) must tell you if a property you want to rent has a history of mould and damp (check with requirements in your state).
