Helmets can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in case of falls or collisions. Most Australian ski resorts recommend wearing helmets and make them mandatory for children and participants in terrain parks or racing. The intention of helmets is to reduce the risk of injury to the skull and part of the head surrounded by the helmet. The protection given by a helmet depends on the circumstances of the accident. Standards Australia has released DR AS 5578:2025 Helmets for alpine skiers and snowboarders (EN 1077:2007, IDT) for Public Comment until 29 October 2025. The objective of this document is to provide performance requirements and tests for two classes of helmets for alpine skiers, snowboarders and for similar groups, including children and participants in competitions.
