Two energy companies permanently abandon door to door sales

The UK’s Consumer Focus reports that two major energy companies have permanently ceased using door to door selling in their marketing.

British Gas and npower have announced a permanent end to doorstep sales in response to our call for the ‘big six’ energy suppliers to consider alternatives that work for consumers.

Energy customers don’t want or need cold calls on the doorstep. We hope that other suppliers will follow suit and that this will lead to an industry-wide end to this sales technique. See our report The end of the road for more details.

In another welcome move, British Gas has committed to giving the £120 Warm Home Discount to all their eligible electricity customers who apply before the end of January. Jonathan Stearn, Consumer Focus’s Head of Sustainability and Disadvantage, joined the panel on BBC Radio 4?s Money Box on 8 October to discuss the scheme. Will other suppliers match the deal or will some people lose out?
