Electrical appliances are an essential part of our daily activities from making toast in the morning to warming our dinner in the evening. The joint Australian and New Zealand Technical Committee EL-002 Safety of household electrical appliances is working on improving the safety aspects in the revision of the AS/NZS 60335 series of standards.
The EL-002 committee considers many safety factors when preparing Standards, including personal protection against electric shock, effects of excessive temperature, radiation, explosion, mechanical stability, hazardous moving parts, and protection against fire.
The committee, with CFA representative David Gray, is currently involved in revising the touch temperatures on appliances, leading the world in this area. In February, the committee met in Wellington NZ , more information is available in the Standards New Zealand newsletter “Touchstone”.
