[box border=”full”]Safety of children’s toys continues to be an issue of concern. CHOICE has recently concluded that kids are at risk from children’s cuddly toys containing wheat bags.[/box]

The ACCC’s Product Safety Australia advises on Buying safe products for your children under the product category for toys.

Standards Australia Technical Committee CS-018 Safety of children’s toys is continuing the revision of the AS/NZS 8124 Safety of toys series of standards and recently published AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2013 Safety of toys, Part 1 Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties.

With most manufacturing being carried out overseas, the committee is also making significant input into a range of international ISO draft standards on toys, some of which will be considered for Australian/New Zealand adoption.  The work is important for global and Australian consumers.

The volunteer CFA representative on the committee is Robyn Easton.

SAI Global provides a Free standards guide – Children’s Products which provides information on Standards, Certification schemes and other industry specific information that may be of interest to manufacturers, importers, suppliers and users of children’s products. The publications outlined in this guide provide information that can be used to assess risks as well as safe practices for products primarily designed for children aged 0-14 years.
