Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) involves infant inclined products and sleep environments that place an infant’s head above a horizontal position and pose serious safety concerns. Sleeping on an incline increases the risk of sudden death for infants if:

  • an infant rolls into part of the product (e.g., into soft fabric) or onto their stomach, which blocks their airway, or
  • the airway becomes compressed, for example, when the head is slumped over, pressing the chin down towards the chest.

Consumers Federation of Australia (CFA) engages with these issues through the CFA Standards Project, supporting representative participation on Standards Australia technical committees such CS-310 Child care articles and developing standards that set out specifications, procedures and guidelines that aim to ensure products, services, and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable, and should meet a range of consumer expectations. Standards are the foundation tools for consumer protection, and an integral part of the way we protect consumers globally. Find out more about the CFA Standards Project and how to get involved.
