From the archives: a history of the Australian consumer movement to 1996

In 1996 CFA commissioned A History of the Australian Consumer Movement. It was a 40 page booklet edited by Fiona Marsden summarising a longer academic paper by Jane Brown.

Other sources for history of the Australian consumer movement include A McLeod’s Abundance, Buying and Selling in Postwar Australia with a forward by Allan Fels. It is based on her PhD thesis and primarily covers 1945 – 1975.

Prosperity for All by Matthew Hilton is an excellent history of the international consumer movement. Among other things it includes some fascinating information on the influences of the UK and American consumer movements on the rebirth of the Australian movement with the founding of Choice (Australian Consumers Association) in the 1960s. There’s a brief review here.
