The report Consumer product-related injuries in Queensland children: A snapshot of current problem areas for potential action was recently released. It highlights the hidden dangers associated with everyday consumer products and looks at ways to improve their safety.
The report examines a range of products that are significantly represented in injury data including:
- bunk beds
- magnets
- trampolines
- cots and portable cots
- strollers and prams
- change tables
- high chairs
- furniture and large appliances.
It also includes information on consumer product types which if misused may result in childhood burns and poisonings. More information from the Queensland University of Technology Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland´s (CARRS-Q)
The Consumers’ Federation of Australia (CFA) has representatives on a number of Standards Australia Technical Committees that are developing or revising standards on these products. The CFA also has representatives on ISO COPOLCO – Committee on Consumer Policy, with Robyn Easton as co-chair of the Product Safety Working Group.
