CFA Member CHOICE is calling for entries in the 2014 Shonky Awards.

From dangerous dummies to dodgy credence claims the CHOICE Shonky Awards name and shame Australia’s worst products and services in a bid to get businesses to lift their game.

“It’s that time of year when lemonswe call on consumers from across the country to nominate a product or a service they believe is the Shonkiest of the lot,” says CHOICE Head of Media Tom Godfrey.

Last year eight companies were awarded the dubious lemon scented honour, including Qantas, Dairy Farmers, Energy Australia and Kleenex.

“If you believe a company is being sneaky, slippery, unscrupulous and even unsafe, we want to hear from you.”

To sink to the depths of a Shonky Award, a product or service has to meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Fails a standard
  • Poor performance on CHOICE tests
  • Hidden charges
  • Lack of transparency
  • False claims or broken promises
  • Consumers are worse off because of it
  • Consumer confusion
  • Poor value for money
  • Consumer frustration, or just plain outrage

“While not every Shonky Award winner may be breaking laws or breaching regulations, CHOICE believes that consumers deserve better products and services.

“With 2014 already boasting so many contenders we’re sure to have an oversupply of lemons are ripe for the picking.”

The 2014 CHOICE Shonky Awards will be revealed on October 14 at Carriageworks in Eveleigh, Sydney, at 10:30am.
