Mandatory grocery unit pricing was introduced in 2009. While an important victory for consumers, consumer groups remain concerned that unit prices are insufficiently legible and prominent for many consumers, concerns that have been confirmed in a recent survey.
The huge range of brands and sizes of grocery items in most supermarkets makes it difficult to work out which are the best value for money. One way to do this is to compare the price per unit of measure – the unit price.
The report of the major national review of food labelling requirements, undertaken by a panel chaired by Dr Neal Blewett, was released in late January 2011.
