Representative opportunity: Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Board

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman seeks to appoint a director with consumer experience to its Board.

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman scheme (TIO) provides an independent dispute resolution service for telephone and internet complaints.

The TIO scheme is managed by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Limited which is a public company limited by guarantee, with an Ombudsman and a Board of nine directors including an Independent Chair.

The Constitution provides for three independent directors, three directors with industry experience and three directors with consumer experience.

The Board is responsible for appointing and protecting the independence of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman reports to the Board and leads a team of around 245, handling complaints from lodgement through to resolution. The TIO Board guides the organisation’s strategy, growth, and direction and ensures compliance with Board duties and obligations.

About the Role

The Board is seeking to appoint three new Directors. Vacancies exist for a Director with Consumer Experience, a Director with Industry Experience and an Independent Director with Not-for-profit Governance Experience.  

Candidates wishing to be considered for the role of Director with Consumer Experience must have experience representing the interests of community or consumer groups of users of telecommunications services, including individual or small business users; and/or a community or consumer group or agency representing public interest issues relevant to telecommunications services.

The TIO Board meets between eight and 10 times a year in Melbourne.

Directors are remunerated and reasonable travel expenses to attend meetings will be reimbursed.
