Consumer Representative on the General Insurance Code Governance Committee

The General Insurance Code Governance Committee (the CGC) is the independent body responsible for monitoring Subscribers’ compliance with the General Insurance Code of Practice (the Code) standards.

The CGC is made up of three Members – an independent Chair, a consumer representative and an industry representative.  It is anticipated that the CGC will meet face to face a minimum of four times per year, and by telephone in addition to that as required.

The CGC is currently seeking suitable candidates for the position of consumer representative to the CGC, which is appointed through nomination by the FOS Board the consumer directors on the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) Board to the Code Governance Committee Association (the Association). The final appointment will be made by the Association.

In selecting the consumer representative, the Association will have regard to whether candidates have broad experience and knowledge of consumer affairs and its application to the general insurance industry; the ability to exercise sound and fair judgment; and the ability to command the respect of the relevant parties.

The successful candidate must not hold any of the following positions at the time of selection or during their tenure on the CGC:

  • A member of the Association;
  • An employee of a Subscriber to the Code, FOS, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) or the Association; or
  • A member of the FOS Board or the ICA Board.

The successful candidate will be appointed in accordance with the Association’s Constitution for a term of three years (and may be eligible to seek a further term of appointment).
